War & Philately  - 6th Year! - FPHS sponsored stamp, postal history & postcard Fair at Banstead, Surrey.

This was the sixth year in which the Society has held its War & Philately event (a stamp, postal history and postcard fair) at the Banstead Community Hall, Park Road, Banstead in Surrey.  Once again we must thank Peter High for organising the event and his wife Dee for running the refreshments on the day itself.  We must also thank the small band of members who helped set up the tables on the Friday afternoon and a slightly larger number who helped take them down again after the event; also a huge thank you to those family and friends who helped Dee in the refreshments area.  This included Tony Walker who came all the way down from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to help set up on the Friday afternoon and stayed in a local hotel for the event itself.  I am also pleased to report that Alistair Kennedy did eventually retrieve his brief case after he left it on the stage whilst helping to pack up after the event and which was accidently taken by a dealer - luckily we managed to work out who the dealer was likely to be by the position of the case on the stage !  By all accounts the day was a success in respect of attendance and dealers satisfaction, although there was a comment that if there were more stamp dealers (rather than postal history) this might attract more collectors - but you can’t win em all !

As usual the Society had a table in the entrance hall and looked after Peter’s book stall.  This was an ideal place to meet and greet people, especially members.  We did manage to sign up one new member but I re-iterate what I said about MIDPEX - I view the event more as an opportunity to meet members rather than a recruiting stand.  I found it very relaxing to simply sit (or stand) and chat to members and non-members alike in a friendly informal manner.  We now look forward to 2018 !
