The Italian invasion of Ethiopia started on 3rd October 1935 when their troops crossed the Mareb River. Although no declaration of war had been made the invasion had been anticipated for some time and the Ethiopians had been preparing for it but they couldn't match the Italians modern weapons, mustard gas attacks and indiscriminate bombing.
