Bernard Lardner and Ethiopia WW2

This was our first meeting of 2011 and thankfully the snows (certainly down in the London area) had all gone. We had 18 members present plus Bernard, which showed a slight increase on our previous few meetings. …

March 2011

Peter Burrows and “POW Mail WW1 & WW2”

Peter started off by saying that this display would cover part of his Prisoner of War collection and would be in three showings - two of WW1 and one of WW2. In response to an earlier enquiry, which meant we were joined by a member who does not normally attend out meetings, Peter confirmed it would include India from both wars ! …

April 2011

The following appeared in Supplement 288

At the 2011 AGM and ‘live’ auction which followed we had some 23 members present with six apologies. The meeting started with the President (Ian Muchall) leading a moments silence in the memory of members who had died during the year, in particular Bill Travers and Michael Goodman. …

Oxford Weekend Conference

Members and their partners arrived during Friday afternoon and met and greeted each other and slowly they came into the meeting room where we started more or less on time ! I don't know what happened to my notes for this session as I appear to be missing a page (I think !) …

16-sheet competition for the John Daynes Plate

Seven entries this year - two up from last year, so a big improvement. We did have one member who had brought along three entries, but we restricted him to oneWe also had one postal entry, from someone who has supported us in the past with postal entries for our competitions, so well done. …

“Fly Past - honouring the RAF through the Years” Members’ displays

This was, I suppose, a belated tribute to the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 2008 and also included the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) which dated back to its formation on 13 May 1912 with separate Naval and Military Wings. …

London "All-day" meeting"

The theme for the day was "Pre-WW1: Forces in peacetime and conflicts" and a number of us had some doubts about members attending and bringing sufficient material for a whole day - but how wrong we were ! …

October 2011

Joint meeting with the Rhodesian Study Circle:

This was a highly entertaining and successful collaboration between the two societies. In opening the joint meeting Peter High (our President) welcomed the Rhodesian Study Circle (RSC) to our venue at the UJC and in turn Mark Thomas, their London Programmes organiser gave a short outline of the history of "Rhodesia" He was "assisted" by one or two RSC members who interjected with relevant points (so please don't ask me to repeat it - very complicated and I didn't get it all down in writing !). …

November 2011

15 Sheets and 9 Minutes:

This was a meeting where members can display just about anything (and they did) and causes me a tremendous headache in trying to write it up - potentially 15 sheets on 15 different subjects. Thankfully no-one did this, although some came close ! …

December 2011

New acquisitions & Queries and a chat over mince pies and coffee:

Well our President (Peter High) and I were absolutely amazed at the turnout - 25 members !  Was it the lure of mince pies we wonder - and in so saying, a big thank you to Sara Martin for the delicious home-made mince pies that Nick brought to the meeting.  …
