15 Sheets and 9 Minutes - Members Displays 


We had 18 members present of whom 13 provided displays and so we were in for a most entertaining afternoon. 

John Leathes was first up on his feet with some Israeli field post from the Six Days War.  He also had a display entitled “Tale of Two Tigers”.  This included material from the WW1 battle cruiser of the same name showing censor marks (of which he had three) and explained how mail was handled ashore.  …

Fortified by lunch across the road at the Auberge and introduced by our President, Peter High, Christine opened with a question - why did she start the collection ?  Her answer was because she was a post-war baby (with plenty of comments as to which war !).  …

16 Sheet Competition for the John Daynes' Plate 

We had as good turn-out with 23 members and guests for this meeting and a total of 7 entries this year - a disappointingly low number compared to a record high last year.  Nevertheless all the entries were of a high standard and diverse in nature ranging from the Boer War to more recent times in the 1990’s.

Notes of the 62nd Annual General Meeting

The AGM started with the President (Peter High) welcoming those present to the meeting, in particular to Ulf Sjoeden from Sweden.  He then led a moments silence in the memory of members who had died during the year, in particular Stephen Dunderdale, Derek Brook, Ged Taylor and Martin Lynes.  …

Prisoners of War and their Camps in the UK and Overseas ( all periods)


Prior to the start of the meeting Peter High had put up a display put together by our late Vice President Martin Lynes.  This and others were available to view by early arrivals prior to the official meeting start time (in other words whilst most of us were over the road at the Auberge enjoying our steak frittes and red wine !).  …

“Falkland Islands and Ascension Island” a display by Wilf Vevers


We competed against SWINPEX in Swindon (which included the GB Overprints Society AGM) and a meeting of The Great Britain Philatelic Society at the ‘Royal’ which also had its AGM and a display by Michael Lockton “On My Honour”, there was “Open Garden Squares” weekend and Trooping the Colour and there were only six of us for lunch at the Auberge, but nevertheless we still managed to attract 20 members.  …

York Weekend Away

The Society held another successful weekend away at the Holiday Inn, Tadcaster Road, York to coincide with the York Stamp & Coin Fair, held on the Friday and Saturday 18 & 19 July.  The main emphasis was on attending the Fair at The Grandstand, York Racecourse, just behind the hotel, and as a social gathering of members and their spouses.  …

Europe At War - Medical facilities, Hospitals etc. - Members' Displays

Peter Burrows started the afternoons displays with recently mounted material - so recent, in fact, he commented that the ink was still wet !  His offering including items from WW1 New Zealand Hospital Ships No 1 (Maheno) and No 2 (Marama); he also stated that wounded soldiers in hospital in England at the beginning of the war were not exempt postage - there was an outcry and so if a letter had an appropriate cachet it was exempt postage.  …

All-day meeting, including Presidents Cup Competition and Martin Lynes Memorial Display


As this day was to include a Memorial Display of material from the late Martin Lynes, one of our Vice-Presidents, who sadly died in November 2013, we re-structured the meeting to accommodate the display which would take up the whole afternoon.  …

FPHS visit North Herts Stamp Club at Stevenage    

Following a request by the North Herts Stamp Club, the Society has provided two speakers (Peter High and Peter Burrows) to an all-day meeting of the Club in Stevenage on the above date and advertised as a joint meeting between the two societies.  As well as the two speakers, the Society was represented by Michael Dobbs, Nick Martin, David Tett and Alistair Kennedy (after all it was one of his local clubs !).  …

Joint Meeting with the Postal History Society

Following on from the success of last year we held another joint meeting with the Postal History Society.  Unfortunately due to a clash of dates this was not so well attended - we lost many to the Society of Postal Historians Presidential weekend.  We have made strenuous efforts to ensure that this does not happen next year !

Joint Meeting with the Falkland Islands Philatelic Study Group (FIPSG) on the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Falklands

Recent Acquisitions & Queries & a chat over mince pies & coffee

 We were in for a feast of luxury mince pies and biscuits, not to mention items displayed by those who attended the meeting.  We attracted some 20 members of whom 15 displayed items ranging from a few sheets to up to three or four boards.  …

For security reasons it is necessary to bring a meeting programme card with you to the meeting. If you are not a member please contact the Membership Secretary for details. Meetings will be held in the Reserved Bar Lounge (except the February and March meetings which will be held in the Gasgoine Room.
