This was a meeting which drew an audience from far and wide, including Reg Gleave from Warminster, Peter Jenkinson from Humberside, Richard Lynes from Bristol, Graham Mark from Somerset and Nick Martin from Lincolnshire as well as our usual London and Home Counties crowd - a total of 23 members (including our speaker).  …

An Afternoon With - John Cowlin

Billed as “An afternoon with John Cowlin” - the title belied the sheer exuberance of colour that was thrust upon us with a wonderful display of postcards from a variety of conflicts from around the world dating from about 1899 to 1945.  John let the cards do the talking and so we were given three showings - for the postcard collector this was indeed a display to behold.

12 March 2016

15-sheet competition - “John Daynes Plate”

Only seven entries this year compared with twelve last year, but nevertheless the standard and quality of entries was high and we also had a first time entrant.

The winner was Tony Walker an entry entitled “The Dover Patrol in World War I”

An afternoon of member’s displays under the theme “Military Ephemera"

An afternoon of member’s displays under the theme “Something Unusual from the Collection”

Regretfully I was unable to attend the September meeting and so my grateful thanks to Peter O’Keeffe for the notes that follow.  It was disappointing to learn that attendance was low and also unusual that most of the ‘top tier’ of officers (President, three Vice Presidents and Hon Secretary) were not able to attend, although Richard Berry did turn up later.

Recent Acquisitions & Queries & a chat over coffee and biscuits

Peter Burrows was first off with items from WW1 POW camp in Wales and working companies in France - first seen of a base depot company in France.  Peter also said that he had recently acquired a number of newspaper cuttings from WW1 on eBay and showed a few items; there were an array of postcards from the National Federation of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers at the end of WW1 as well as cards from the War Books and Games Fund; a tie-on label from the Leicestershire and Leicester Wool Fund; Red Cross Message Form (from an Italian Prisoner in Germany); items from the Israeli Six-Day War; RE Open Day postcards and an RAF item with the initials TME - but what does TME stand for ?
